Day 1 in your Newly-Built Home
What to Expect
You have gotten past all the arduous mortgage paperwork and the mountains of housing brochures before finally signing the dotted line before waiting for the keys of your new home. It is a truly special moment when you get the keys to your new home and it is the beginning of a whole new journey. Here is what to expect as you move into your new home on Day 1:
Keep your expectations realistic – It might be stressful
Although the entire team here at Victoria Homes strives to have everything perfect for you, there is no doubt that moving can be one of the most stressful lifetime events. Once you collect your keys you will certainly have initial feelings of elation and perhaps relief, but prepare for a frantic first day. If you are moving with kids or pets your anxiety may be through the roof, however, we hope you can enjoy this monumental step in moving home and enjoy it though it may be somewhat chaotic.
It will be fun too
It will be fun as hopefully you will be so excited at moving into your new home that your good mood will get you through the things that don’t go exactly to plan. The moving boxes and re-arranging will be tough on the body as you transition into your new home. You may go from laughing to crying emotionally and that is perfectly okay. Day 1 in your new home is a momentous occasion and one that will be remembered for years to come – make sure you remember it for all the right reasons!
There will be lots to do
There will be so much to do, and a good tip is making sure you having everything labelled in boxes and a basic ‘survival’ box for the first day or two. The survival box should include the following:
- Toiletries and personal hygiene items – Toilet paper, soap, toothpaste and toothbrush, hair products, skin care products, shower curtain, towels and anything else your family can’t live without need to be in your box.
- Bedding – Sheets, blankets, pillows, pillow cases, etc. The best tip we can give you is to make your bed straight away as there is nothing worse than a tired body and an unmade bed. The beauty of a new home is that everything will be there, so you will just have to add the linen!
- Clothes – Comfortable clothes for changing into after the move, pyjamas and back up clothes in case they are needed.
- Medications – First-aid kit with plenty of plasters, pain relievers, allergy medication and anything else your family may need.
- Electronics – Phones, tablets, laptops or any other electronic devices (and their chargers) that will allow you to relax in the evening after a hard day.
- Your children’s favourite stuffed teddy, blanket, storybook and toys.
- Your pet’s familiar bed, blanket and favourite toy.
- Cleaning supplies and materials – You will want to clean as you go i.e. wipe out cupboards before filling them.
- Power tools – Who knows when you will need a drill?!
- Local takeaway menus – There is zero chance that you will want to cook, and you may like to get a takeaway or maybe a family member might bring over some homemade food.
- Basic food ingredients – Kettle, tea/coffee, snacks and fruits are so important to keep your energy levels up. You should have a few yogurts, custard or bars if you have kiddies. Don’t forget the pets’ dinner and a few snacks for everyone too. Plenty of water and other drinks are ideal too in your box.
You may get to meet some neighbours
You may prefer to wait to introduce yourself to your new neighbours and community, but it is unavoidable if you are going in and out all day. You may not look your best but be ready to strike up conversation and don’t feel guilty for only stopping for a short chat. Tell your neighbours to drop in once you are a bit more settled. The groundwork can be done today for good relationships in the future.
It will get easier
Soon you will be settled into your new home and it may take a few days or longer but don’t feel pressured. Take your time and once you do what needs to be done to allow your family function comfortably for the first few days you should relax. This is meant to be a happy time after all!
