Bringing your home and garden back to life after the heatwave
If anything, the last few weeks have taught us how much our gardens and home are impacted by heatwave temperatures. The weather has been simply glorious, however, like most people you might be wondering what to do about your garden and your home that may require a bit of TLC after being dehydrated for so long. While this is certainly not a common problem in Ireland, the team here at Victoria Homes have done some research and consulted the experts to find out ways to bring your home and garden back to vitality after summer 2018:
Sort out the plants
The plants will be stressed out by recent temperatures and this is something you will have to take care of by doing a full-on health check. Most plants may droop or lag down, and some may even have lost their gorgeous natural colour. Many stressed plants look thirsty, so a deep watering session is vital but with recent water restrictions this isn’t advisable until they are lifted. You may need to accept that some plants even with some watering and TLC will still not recover after the loss of moisture. If you lose a beloved plant add it to the compost pile and know that it is doing some good after its short life.
Clean the windows
The windows are probably dusty after the spell of good weather, with the remnants of many insects making you cry inwardly at the state of the smears. However, all is not lost, and a good cleaning spree will sort them – you don’t even need water. A good window cleaner will do the job and bring your windows back to their shiny selves.
Mop the floors
We know the situation only too well, the floors are a testament to your outdoor living lifestyle, maybe even littered with sand after numerous trips to the beach (totally worth it!). You didn’t mop them properly as it was a worthless task and now the place is terribly dull. Fortunately, most floor cleaners can be bought in a bottle – ready made so they can be sprayed straight onto the floors without the question of wasting water.
Get rid of unwanted guests
Those pesky flies are little menaces and no matter how clean your home is, chances are you have found your home a hive of fly activity. We are not fans of those sticky rolls hanging from the ceiling (circa. 1985) so a good fly spray should do the job. As the weather changes we probably won’t have the doors open as often and this should stop you having other mouths to feed!
Discover the non-glamorous side of home ownership
The bins will be unpleasant and odorous with the hot weather so even if you do not use it regularly, you might need to use bleach or Jeyes fluid to clean out the bins properly – both indoor and outdoor bins. Gosh, this certainly isn’t our most glamorous post, but owning a home goes beyond the Instagram-worthy moments.
Do odd jobs you couldn’t do in the heat
It was too hot to do anything during the heatwave but now you have no such excuse so start tidying the garden up. Paint the fence, clean the decking, attack the weeds (the only things that seemed to thrive in the heat) and plant a few new shrubs to replace the ones you may have lost in the recent weather. Hold off on reseeding the lawn until the hose-pipe ban is lifted unless you know a good rainfall is forecast. You may have ignored the house but now you can do those few bits in the house including painting, minor repairs and some decorative changes.
