New Homes ‘Need to Know’ Series
Finding New Favourites
Moving homes can feel like a daunting experience. Sure, it is exciting and full of potential, but it can also be quite jarring to find yourself in your new home on day one, unable to locate the nearest hardware shop or a place to buy superglue. By the way, that’s our pro tip of the week, every moving day requires superglue – and plenty of coffee!
It can take time to fully settle into a new area. Most buyers will spend time in their new location before deciding to buy a home, however, these early trips usually focus on local schools or transport links. It is only after the deal is done that most almost-homeowners start to pay attention to nearest grocery shops and garages/service stations. By moving day, the area should start to feel familiar, yet, there is plenty that you will need to figure out, and fast.
Is there a quicker route to work or the school that avoids rush-hour traffic? Is the coffee in one cafe worth the extra parking hassle? Which takeaway is to be avoided at all costs? Does the local garage stock refuse sacks?
These are just a selection of the mundane things you will need to figure out when you move to a new area in order to make life easier. The good news is, you don’t need to figure this out all by yourself. Google will give you the information, but new neighbours will always give you the useful scoop on local hits and misses, where to go and where to avoid. These early insights are invaluable and can save you valuable time, money and digestive comforts.
The new favourites you will need to figure out first are:
- Corner shops/small grocery shops – even if you shop online for home deliveries, late night dashes for last-minute provisions are inevitable. This ought to be your number one priority find.
- GP and pharmacy – this is usually not considered at all until it is urgent, do not leave this until you need it. Know where your nearest pharmacy is and register with the local medical practice (maybe ask new neighbours for suggestions, if there is a choice locally – the extra few minutes’ walk might well be worth it).
- Cafes and restaurants are an important social point, especially when you are new to an area. This is also a great excuse for some tasty ‘research’!
- Banks and Post Office – while most of us are fully embracing online banking now, banks still host the most reliable and secure ATMs around so you will likely need to access this within your first few weeks after moving in. Be sure to check out their opening hours and lobby access hours for automated in-branch banking. Also, the Post Office is probably more vital than the bank for most people for collecting missed post and sending parcels. Post offices in Ireland are consistently extending their range of services so be sure to check out your local PO.
- Finally, be sure to prioritise and spend time finding your new favourite local walk and adventure, whether that is by the Grand Canal or in the Memorial Gardens or perhaps even around Dublin Bay out to Poolbeg Lighthouse. Dublin City is now yours to discover, enjoy it!
